Progress Over Perfection

Feb. 2 - 6

Week five was a slower week. We had some smaller projects, but with three, sometimes four, of us, it was difficult to find enough work for everyone.

  • Rixida was a big part of this week, but I can’t show any visuals yet for phase two.

  • President Oaks had a devotional, and I created a slide for him.

  • Department logo designs

  • Worked on a Pathways and BYUI relationship document

Due to the nature of my position, it’s my job to facilitate communication between three different design teams. My team focuses on branding, but there are two other groups as well.

The Campus Design Force focuses on template work and smaller projects for societies. They work with student project managers on simpler design tasks, like font changes in Illustrator documents or updating expiration dates on posters.

The third team reports to a senior designer and focuses on more creative projects. Their main clients include campus performances like CenterStage and theater productions, as well as environmental and spatial design work.

Even though there are three separate teams, we all support each other. Sometimes, though, there just isn’t enough work to go around. Because of my role, people often come to me asking if there are tasks they can help with. This week felt like pulling teeth at times.

The Rixida project officially has the green light, and once other tasks are completed, our priority is contributing sketches. Some people really don’t enjoy sketching and were looking for other tasks to avoid it. From what I’ve been told, it often comes from perfectionism, since sketching is naturally messy.

Honestly, I don’t think it matters too much as long as the work gets done. Because of that, I’ve ended up picking up more of the sketching workload. My personal goal has been to complete at least one page of sketches each day. Some of them are rough, others have potential.

I’ve found that sitting down and just filling a page helps. Some days I’ve done 30 sketches in one sitting, other days maybe only five. It can be a little frustrating, but everyone has different strengths.
